How to Add Texture or Grain to Vinyl and Leather

After a successful repair your repair surface may now be smooth and does not match the original grain. You need to match the grain, so the repair is seamless. There are many ways to add texture or grain to vinyl and leather.

Grain Mold and Grain Paper:

  • If you used a heat cured compound for your repair, you can impress a grain with a grain mold or a grain paper into your last layer of compound.
  • If you are using air dry compounds, you can use the Finish Touch compound as your last compound layer which is impressible.
  • We sell premade grain paper and grain molds, but we also sell a kit to make your own grain molds. (see how to make grain mold post here)
  • A grain paper you can only use a couple of times while a grain mold lasts a long time.

Spray Texture

  • There are two types of spray texture: water based and solvent based.
  • You will often find a solvent based spray texture in an aerosol can where water based will be in a plastic bottle. You have to use a Preval or airbrush to apply the water based.
  • Spray textures often create a more pebble-like textures to your surface. The closer to the surface you apply it, the closer the pebbles will be. If you apple it further away from the surface then the pebbles will be more spread out.
  • You find a pebble texture surface more often on dashboards and door panels.
