When you see damage in vinyl, often times it is all the way through to the foam. Here are the steps to repair that:
- Clean your surface with a waterborne cleaner (XXX Universal Cleaner or SEM Soap) then prep with a solvent (Vinyl Prep).
- Pick out your graining method. You can choose one of our premade graining molds or paper, or you can make your own with our Grain Mold Kit.
- Cut backing fabric 1/8" bigger than the hole and insert it under the hole, shiny side up.
- Heat outer edges of hole to adhere the fabric then lightly press with a cold block.
- Apply a thin layer of a vinyl compound (Vinyl Hyde) over the repair area.
- Cure the compound with a heat gun or iron and then impress the grain.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 multiple times to make the repair area level.
- Apply color in light coats to blend with surrounding area.
Extra Tips:
- Make sure you heat over Teflon to protect your material.
- Make sure the last layer has a good grain blended into the original grain.
- If the vinyl is swollen because of excess heat then use a cold block to reduce the heat.
- If you want extra strength, add a layer of Chemscreen to your repair (see our Chemscreen post for more details).
