The Value of Prep!

Is your flexible coating peeling or chipping off your vinyl or leather? Then most likely the surface was not prepped properly. So, how do you prep a surface to ensure years of lasting color?

  1. Clean the surface with a water based cleaner to remove any water based contaminates (such as food or drinks). Some good cleaners are SEM Soap, XXX Universal Cleaner, or Vinyl and Leather Cleaner. Make sure you use a lint free cloth and wipe in a one direction.
  2. Next, you need to use a solvent based prep on the surface. This will remove solvent based contaminates (such as body lotion).  It will also open the pores of the surface to absorb the color. The prep you use depends on the surface you are working on. There is vinyl, leather and plastic prep. The best way to apply prep is to spray one coat and wipe away with a lint free cloth in a one direction.
  3. You are now ready to apply your color!

Some Extra Tips!

  • You can use masking tape to make sure your surface is free of contaminates and debris. If masking tape is hard to come off the surface it is prepped enough. If the tape comes off easy, prep again.
  • Armor-All is very hard to remove off vinyl and leather and it can interfere with adhesion. Try to stay away from it.
