Over time headlights on any vehicle will start to become yellow and cloudy. This happens because of numerous reasons; oxidation from UV exposure, physical damage from road debris and the accumulation of dirt and chemicals. Replacing headlights can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Luckily, you can restore the headlights to look brand new. So how do you do that?
A good car wash is not going to get the job done, you need to replace the clear coat on the headlights. Here are step by step instructions to do that.
- Mask and tape off automotive surface to prevent overspray.
- Clean the yellow oxidation off the headlight with Safelights Lens Cleaner and let dry.
- Wet sand the headlight with 600 grit sandpaper followed by 1000 grit
sandpaper. (If the headlight is really bas you can sand with an 800 grit
before the 1000 grit.) - Remove all sanding debris with a lint free cloth.
- Shake can well then spray one medium coat of Safelights 2K Clear Coat on your headlight from 6-8 inches away.
- Wait (flash) between layers: 5 minutes in 65 -75F (18-24C) ambient
temperature then apply a second coat. - Wait 20 minutes for the surface to be dust free. (Always touch the masking tape to check for dryness before unmasking.)
That is all it takes. You have cut your cost drastically as each can of the Safelights 2K Clear Coat will do 10 sets of cars and has an unlimited potlife. Check out this video below to really see this process in action.
