Cracked leather is one of the most common types of damage you will see in an automotive vehicle or on furniture. A crack is not all the way to the foam. Here are the steps on how to repair cracked leather.
- Clean and prep your surface. You need to remove all water based contaminates with a water based cleaner and you will need to remove all solvent based contaminates with a prep. (ex. SEM Soap and Plastic/Leather Prep)
- Apply an air dry compound (ex. EZ Leather Fill) to your cracked surface. Do not put the compound on too thick and make sure it is as smooth as possible. Do not put the compound outside the damaged area.
- Let the compound air dry or speed it up with a hair dryer.
- After the compound dries and if it is rough, you can sand with a 600-grit sandpaper.
- You may notice that the area is missing some grain that the original surface has. Read our post on graining vinyl and leather to re-grain the surface.
- Clean and prep the surface again.
- Recolor.

Sometimes you might need to take the filter tip-off of the Pre-val applicator to produce a more pronounced grain if needed.
